hermaphrodite

Hermaphrodites are organisms with both male and female reproductive organs. Sequential hermaphrodites are organisms that are born as one sex which could potentially change later in life. There are three groups of sequential hermaphrodites: protandry, in which an organism is born as a male but changes into a female; protogyny, in which an organism is born as a female but changes into a male; and bidirectional sex changers, in which the organism is born with male and female gonads and could act as either sex during different stages of life. Clownfish are initially male but the largest and most aggressive becomes a female. If the female is somehow lost then the next largest and most aggressive will become the new female of the group, establishing a strict dominance hierarchy.
