redox reaction

A redox reaction is a chemical reaction which involves the transfer of electrons between species. The oxidation state of the atoms are changed during this type of chemical reaction and the oxidation state could increase or decrease depending on which type of redox reaction it is. It is an oxidation if the atom loses electrons and it is a reduction if an atom gains electrons. The rusting of iron is an example of a redox reaction in which oxygen and iron reacts with each other to produce iron (III) oxide.
