homeostasis

Homeostasis is the tendency of the internal environment of an organism to remain stable despite the changes in the external environment. For instance, the temperature inside a mammal's body will remain stable even if the temperature outside is hot or cold. In the picture is a thermostat which regulates the temperature inside a house in response to the temperature outside.
